What is Spotlight??
Spotlight is our Gifted and Talented Program at Lewisburg Elementary School. The word Spotlight is an acronym that stands for Specialized Plan of Teaching Learners Involving the Gifted and Highly Talented. Our Spotlight program provides challenging curriculum by exploring thematic units, involving the outcomes of intellectually gifted education, while also catering to each child’s individual needs. These outcomes are thinking skills, creativity, communication skills, affective skills (social and emotional) information literacy (research), and success skills (leadership/teamwork).
Common Questions about Spotlight:
I would like my child to be tested for the Spotlight Program, what do I need to do?
Please send an email to me at [email protected] or send an email to your child's classroom teacher.
Has my child been tested for Spotlight?
All students are screened in the spring of 1st grade in DeSoto County. Students new to the district or the state or coming from a private school will be screened as soon as they begin at LES. If you are new to LES and your child needs to be tested or was in a gifted program at another school, please email me at [email protected].
My 1st grade child passed the first screener this spring, when will the second test be?
1st grade students who have passed the first screener in the spring, will be tested during the summer before 2nd grade. County office will call and arrange a time that will best fit your schedule for the summer. If for some reason the summer does not work, your child will be tested in the first few weeks of school.
How long will my student be in the Spotlight Program?
In DeSoto County, students begin Gifted services in the 2nd grade and continue until the end of 6th grade.
My child is smart and makes straight A's, why aren't they in Spotlight?
Spotlight is not about making straight A's. Intellectually gifted sometimes can be confused with Academically Gifted students.
